There are many potential hazards around our homes and gardens at this magical time of the year that may cause problems for your curious dog - here are a few to things to consider:
Pine Needles can cause cuts to the mouth, mild gastrointestinal upsets and in severe cases intestine perforation if ingested.
Fairy Lights can cause burns to the mouth or even an electric shock if chewed.
Tinsel + Lametta (strands of tinsel) can cause gastrointestinal blockages if ingested.
Glass Baubles can be knocked off the tree and broken which can cause cuts to the paw and ****pads. They can also cause gastrointestinal problems if chewed or swallowed.
Salt Dough Ornaments are made by mixing flour and salt with water. Ingestion of these can cause gastrointestinal upsets, seizures and potentially fatal salt toxicosis.
These can all be used to decorate the home during the festive season and although they are mildly toxic, they should be placed out of reach of our four legged friends.
If ingested, especially the berries*,* they can cause gastrointestinal upsets, including vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.
Prolonged skin contact from ivy can cause irritant and allergic contact dermatitis.
This can cause significant gastrointestinal effects if ingested, which can last several days after the material has passed through the gut.
