Walks in the early morning or later evening are the best times rather than in the hottest part of the day. Keep dogs cool on walks by choosing shady areas, limit over exertion, consider using a cool coat, take cooled water for the dog and yourself.

Prior to walking your dog(s) check the temperature of the pavement by placing the back of your hand on it and holding it there for 5 - 7 seconds. If it’s too painful for your hand, then its too painful for the dogs paws. Looking at the weather outside and checking the air temperature, does not determine the temperature of the pavement!

FACT: Some breeds are much more temperature sensitive than others, like brachycephalic breeds (for example, boxers, pugs).
FACT: Be mindful of humidity levels as well as the air temperature. The best humidity range for dogs is between 30% - 50%, to prevent dryness leading to nose, throat, lip and skin irritation. Dogs can manage wider fluctuations, but high humidity results in dogs struggling to cool down and being prone to heatstroke, particularly in hot weather.
On some days it's just too hot to walk dogs, so provide them with cool shady spots in the garden or the house. Ensure plenty of cool fresh water is available and use fans, cool mats, cool coats and natural breezes to keep them comfortable.
